Matthew 5:14 -You are the light of the world. A city on a hill Psalm 43:3 -Oh send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; cannot be hidden. Let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle. (NKJV)

In preparation for this devotional we thought it would be well for us to see what a dictionary might say about light...a few of the phrases we liked include brightness, illumination, knowledge, enlightenment, to ignite (to catch fire) and to understand.

Phyllis and I took a particular liking to the idea of  understanding as comes with the phrase, “I saw the light.” In other words, we came to an understanding of what it means when Jesus says to us that we are the world’s light. We are to serve Jesus through service to those around us who are in need.

A few years ago, my brother Bill and his wife Dotty were on their way from Indianapolis to New Albany to visit Dotty’s mother. Nearing New Albany, they noticed a car along the side of the road with what appeared to be a flat tire. As they continued down the road for a few miles, they felt the need to investigate the situation. At the first turn-around they returned to the car by the side of the road. They discovered a family of four who were obviously tired and frustrated because of their misfortune. Further conversation with the family revealed that they were traveling to Kentucky for a visit with the children’s grandparents. The tire was not repairable. They had no spare. They were also short of cash. Bill and Dotty decided to help by taking the family to New Albany to purchase a new tire at WalMart and returning them to their car. Bill and Dotty did purchase the tire for the family and also stopped at McDonald’s on the way back for lunch. Bill and Dotty have often shared their thankfulness for this opportunity to serve and for the fact that they were in a position to act.

When Phyllis and I first heard this story we were aghast at the action taken. The more we listened and the more we thought about what happened we began to understand that this was truly an example of not letting their LIGHT be hidden.

Prayer: We give thanks to God for all the blessings that come our way. We ask that we be ever mindful of the opportunities to be of service that you give us each day. Amen .
