John 12:36 -Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.
In this passage, the term light is used to represent Jesus. Jesus is referring to himself as the light that allows Christians to know where they are going. Interchange the word light with Jesus and what do you find? We are asked to firstly put our Faith in the Lord Jesus and secondly to become a child of Jesus. Well, what does it mean to trust in something? The dictionary defines trust as, “reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc. of a person or thing.” When Christians first begin their spiritual journey they are asked to put complete trust in the Lord. We begin to understand that we are incapable of being exactly what is asked of us without the help of Jesus. His integrity, strength, and ability are what we must rely on as believers. This however is not all that is asked. We are to allow God to make us into “sons and daughters of light.” After we become Christians, we are called to not only believe and trust completely in Jesus, we are asked to become like him. We are his heirs, his posterity, and we are called to do all we can in an effort to live up to this. We are to learn continually, serve continually, pray continually. We must constantly be growing and maturing as the children, as the followers of Christ.
Imagine the seed of an oak tree is planted in the ground. As soon as the seed is planted, the life of the tree has begun, but the tree must do more than live as a seed. The natural course for the seed is to grow into a young, green seedling, then to a firm, wiry sapling, then into a mature, strong tree. The oak began its journey under the ground, growing its vast, rooted foundation, but it didn’t stop there. It continued on its journey until it reached maturity. We also should strive towards this goal.
