Ugly Quilts
Meeting the second Friday each month at 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. in Stephenson Hall.
The Ugly Quilt Group creates unique bedrolls using old blankets, sheets & quilts. No skill is required - just bring a pair of scissors. Ugly Quilts are distributed with literature, hats, mittens, socks & toiletries through Township Trustees in Hamilton County.
This group is made up of individuals that desire to help those in need with gifts of sleeping bags. The sleeping bags are distributed freely to needy people. Occasionally, those in need are temporarily displaced due to flood, fire, or a tornado. The purpose is to help the homeless and needy to stay warm.
Each "Ugly Quilt" is made of clean, donated items. It is a simple bedroll of three layers: the outer layer is often a warm comforter, queen size is ideal; the middle layer is a warm blanket; the inside layer is often two twin sheets sewn or flannels pieced together. The finished size of the quilt is 7 x7 feet. The basic skill necessary to "tie" an ugly quilt is the square knot, placed 12" apart throughout the bedroll. A donated man's tie is sewn into the bottom seam after placing right sides together. To each bedroll is added a toiletry kit, a hat, a pair of gloves, and two pairs of socks. Reading material, such as "Guideposts," is also included to give a message of hope. Each bag is tagged with the name and location of the church which assembled the bags.
